Cannabis Pathogens and Human Health: what growers and consumers should know

Some pathogens are strictly plant problems with zero risk to humans. Others produce toxins that persist in the final product. Here’s a clear framework for telling them apart.

Cannabis plants are susceptible to a wide range of pathogens: viroids, viruses, fungi, and bacteria.

For cultivators, the primary concern is crop loss and quality degradation. But a question that comes up increasingly — from growers, regulators, and consumers — is whether these pathogens also pose a risk to human health.

The short answer: it depends entirely on the pathogen. Some are strictly plant problems with zero risk to humans. Others can produce toxins that persist in the final product or, in rare cases, cause direct infection in vulnerable individuals.

Viroids (HLVd): plant-only, no human health risk

Hop Latent Viroid is the most economically significant cannabis pathogen, but it poses no known risk to human health. Viroids are tiny RNA molecules that can only replicate inside plant cells. They do not infect human cells, animal cells, or any non-plant organism. Cannabis from an HLVd-infected plant is not dangerous to consume — the product will have reduced potency and quality, but the viroid itself is not a contaminant.

Risk to consumers

None known. The impact is economic, not toxicological.

Plant viruses (TMV, LCV, BCTV): plant-only, no human risk

Plant viruses infect plant cells using plant cellular machinery and cannot replicate in human or animal cells. Consuming cannabis infected with a plant virus is not a known health risk.

Fusarium: primarily crop pathogen, with caveats

Fusarium species that infect cannabis are plant pathogens, and healthy individuals are generally not at risk. However, two secondary risks exist:

Mycotoxins. Certain species produce trichothecenes, zearalenone, and fumonisins. Research (Stephens et al., 2025) detected these in 16% of seized cannabis samples, even without visible mold. These toxins are heat-stable and survive smoking. No U.S. state currently mandates testing for Fusarium mycotoxins in cannabis.

Opportunistic infection. Some Fusarium species can cause infection in immunocompromised individuals (cancer patients, transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients). This is rare but relevant, because immunocompromised consumers are a significant segment of the medical cannabis market.

Important nuance

Not all Fusarium-infected cannabis is dangerous. The risk depends on species, mycotoxin presence, product condition, and the consumer. Agricultural impact is the primary concern; mycotoxins are tested post-harvest in regulated markets.

Aspergillus: the highest documented human health risk

Aspergillus species (A. fumigatusA. flavusA. niger) pose the most documented risk to human health in cannabis. They produce aflatoxins and other known carcinogens. More critically, Aspergillus spores can cause invasive aspergillosis when inhaled by immunocompromised individuals. Multiple clinical case reports document serious and sometimes fatal infections linked to cannabis consumption.

Because approximately 70% of cannabis is consumed by smoking or vaporizing, spores and toxins are delivered directly into lung tissue, making fungal contaminants in cannabis potentially more dangerous than in food products. Most U.S. states with regulated markets require testing for Aspergillus species before products can be sold.

Moderate to high for immunocompromised individuals. Low for healthy consumers if the product passes regulatory testing.

Botrytis and Pythium: crop-level concern

Botrytis cinerea (gray mold) and Pythium (root rot) primarily affect the crop. Neither is known to infect humans directly. Botrytis-contaminated flower is visually obvious and typically fails quality inspection. Pythium affects roots and is not present in harvested flower.

Minimal under normal circumstances.
