Four causes that look the same but need completely different solutions — and how to tell them apart before you treat the wrong problem.

Yellow leaves are one of the most common problems in cannabis cultivation, and one of the most misdiagnosed.

The reason is simple: at least four completely different causes produce the same visible symptom. A nitrogen deficiency looks like HLVd. An iron deficiency looks like a viral infection. A Fusarium infection looks like overwatering. While you troubleshoot potential causes, if the root problem was a pathogen it has had days or even weeks to spread through your facility via shared water sources.

Here, we break down the four most common causes of yellowing cannabis leaves for you, how to tell them apart, and why visual diagnosis alone often leads growers to treat the wrong problem.

1. Nutrient Deficiency

Nutrient deficiencies are the first thing most growers check, and for good reason. They are the most frequent cause of yellowing.

Nitrogen deficiency is the most common. It causes uniform yellowing that starts on the lower, older leaves and moves upward. The plant pulls nitrogen from older foliage to support new growth, so the bottom of the canopy fades first. This is especially common during the vegetative stage when nitrogen demand is highest.

Magnesium deficiency shows up differently: yellowing between the veins of older leaves (interveinal chlorosis), while the veins themselves stay green. This creates a characteristic striped pattern that nitrogen deficiency does not produce.

Iron deficiency affects new growth first, not old growth. Young leaves at the top of the canopy turn pale yellow or white while lower leaves remain green. This is the opposite pattern of nitrogen deficiency and is an important diagnostic clue.

What to do

Test your runoff pH. Most nutrient deficiencies in cannabis are not caused by a lack of nutrients in the feed, but by pH lockout: the nutrients are present in the growing medium but the plant cannot absorb them because the pH is outside the optimal range (5.8-6.5 for soilless, 6.0-7.0 for soil). Correcting pH often resolves the yellowing without changing the nutrient formula.

2. Pathogen Infection

This is where yellowing becomes dangerous, because pathogen-driven yellowing looks almost identical to nutrient deficiency on the surface, but requires a completely different response.

Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd) is particularly deceptive. Infected plants can show reduced vigor, pale leaves, and lower cannabinoid production, symptoms that look like a nutrient problem or environmental stress. According to research published by Punja et al. (2023), approximately 70% of HLVd-infected plants show no visible symptoms at all. The infection is there, silently reducing yield and potency, while the grower adjusts nutrient ratios that were never the problem.

Fusarium oxysporum causes yellowing and wilting that often starts on one side of the plant or one branch, which can help distinguish it from nutrient deficiency (which tends to affect the plant more uniformly). Fusarium attacks the vascular system, blocking the plant’s ability to transport water and nutrients. By the time symptoms are visible, the fungal infection is well established. There are currently no registered chemical fungicides approved for cannabis, making early detection critical.

There are many species of Fusarium which produce similar symptoms, and require the same response to mitigate and eliminate the pathogen. For that reason, Fusarium tests at the genus level (pan-Fusarium) that will detect any of these potential pathogens that may cause problems in your garden.

Viral infections such as Lettuce Chlorosis Virus, Beet Curly Top Virus, and others can also produce yellowing, leaf curl, and stunted growth that mimic nutritional problems.

What to do

If yellowing persists after correcting pH and nutrients, or if the pattern is unusual (one-sided, patchy, or affecting plants inconsistently across a room), the only way to confirm or rule out a pathogen is molecular testing. Visual inspection cannot distinguish between a nitrogen-deficient plant and an HLVd-infected plant with reduced vigor.

3. Environmental factors

Environmental factors such as suboptimal light, temperature, or water issues can cause yellowing that resolves once the stress is removed, but chronic stress weakens plants and opens the door to secondary infections.

Light stress causes bleaching and yellowing on the upper canopy, the leaves closest to the light source. This is distinct from nutrient deficiency, which typically affects lower leaves first. Leaves may also curl upward or develop brown, crispy edges.

Temperature extremes affect the entire plant. Cannabis grows best between 20-30°C (68-86°F). Below 15°C (59°F), metabolic processes slow and leaves can yellow and develop purple tones. Above 30°C (86°F), heat stress causes rapid wilting, yellowing, and curling.

Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes. It deprives roots of oxygen, leading to root rot and a cascade of symptoms that look like nutrient deficiency: yellowing, drooping, and slow growth. The key diagnostic clue is the growing medium: if it is consistently wet and heavy, overwatering is likely a contributing factor.

What to do

Check your environment before changing your feed. Light distance, temperature, humidity, and watering frequency should all be evaluated before assuming a nutrient problem.

4. Natural senescence

Not all yellowing is a problem. During late flowering (the final 2-3 weeks before harvest), cannabis naturally redirects nutrients from fan leaves to flowers. Lower fan leaves turn yellow and drop. This is normal senescence and does not require intervention. This is referred to as “fading” or “the fade”. You may also see other colors such as orange, red, or purple as the chlorophyll is absorbed into the plant, just as deciduous trees show their magnificent fall foliage colors before dropping their leaves, so too does cannabis.

The key distinction

Senescence affects lower fan leaves late in flower, progresses slowly, and does not affect bud development. If yellowing is rapid, widespread, affects upper growth, or appears during veg, it is not senescence.

The real problem: treating the wrong cause

The biggest risk with yellow cannabis leaves is not the yellowing itself. It is treating the wrong cause as time ticks by.

A grower who sees yellowing and adds nitrogen may temporarily mask the symptom. But if the real cause is HLVd, the viroid will continue replicating and quietly spread through the room while the grower adjusts nutrient ratios that were never the issue. If the pathogen manages to infect plants in the mother room, every clone taken from an infected mother potentially carries the viroid to the next cycle and will continue spreading throughout the garden.

Visual diagnosis tells you something is wrong. Molecular testing tells you what.

This is why commercial operations are increasingly adding molecular pathogen testing to their diagnostic workflow. Not as a replacement for visual monitoring and environmental management, but as a tool that answers the one question visual inspection cannot: is a pathogen present?

When to test

If you observe yellowing that does not respond to pH correction and nutrient adjustment within 7-10 days, or if the pattern is inconsistent across plants in the same room receiving the same inputs, pathogen testing can quickly confirm or rule out an infectious cause. Testing is especially important for mother plants, new genetic introductions, and mother plants used for clonal propagation.
